In all likelihood, if he and his Grandpa hadn't stolen the Fizzy Lifting Drinks, he would have automatically gotten the factory and Wonka would have allowed him to keep the gobstopper. However, Charlie realizes that he made a mistake and the only way to rectify it is to give back the most important thing he has (the one thing Wonka entrusted him with). In turn, he proves his honesty and trustworthiness to Wonka (even though we already know it) and gains the factory. I’ve got to disagree. Charlie could have easily been an "honest, trustworthy person aware and in control of his own morality" without handing over the gobstopper. He could have quite honestly held on to the gobstopper with no intention of dealing with Slugworth, and instead cherising the one souveneir he gleaned from the best day of his life. And Mr Wonka shouldn't have judged Charlie on whether he handed back the gobstopper or not. Brilliant movie. I love it. And have no desire to see Burton's remake.
